An individual retirement security account (IKZE) lets you deduct contributions from income or revenue in your annual return and, after the age of 65, withdraw the accumulated funds with a 10% flat-rate tax. In 2026 a person running a business can pay in up to PLN 16,956; everyone else — up to PLN 11,304. Below we explain who is entitled to the higher limit, what the real saving is in each form of taxation and when IKZE does not pay off.
Contribution limits in 2026
The Act on IKE and IKZE ties the limit to the forecast average monthly wage, and the minister announces the amounts in a notice for each year:
| Who pays in | Multiplier | Limit in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Person conducting non-agricultural business activity (within the meaning of the social-insurance rules) | 1.8 × forecast average wage | PLN 16,956 |
| Others (employees, mandate contractors, persons without business income) | 1.2 × forecast average wage | PLN 11,304 |
The limit applies to a calendar year and covers all contributions to a person's IKZE. The unused portion cannot be carried over to the next year. Any excess over the limit is returned by the financial institution, and only the amounts that actually arrived in a given year can be deducted.
Deduction depending on the form of taxation
IKZE works with each of the three popular forms of taxation of business activity, but a little differently in each:
- tax scale — contributions are deducted from income; the benefit is 12% of the amount paid in, or 32% if income is in the second bracket,
- flat tax (podatek liniowy) — deduction from income taxed at 19%,
- ryczałt (lump-sum tax on recorded revenue) — contributions are deducted from revenue, with a saving equal to the ryczałt rate (for example 12% or 8.5%).
The deduction is settled in the annual return (PIT-36, PIT-36L or PIT-28), so the money comes back as lower tax due or a refund of overpayment after the return is filed. It cannot be reflected in monthly advances.
How much an entrepreneur actually gains — example
An entrepreneur pays the full limit of PLN 16,956 in 2026. Her tax saving on the 2026 return depends on the form of taxation:
| Form of taxation | Rate | Tax reduction |
|---|---|---|
| Scale — second bracket | 32% | PLN 5,425.92 |
| Flat tax | 19% | PLN 3,221.64 |
| Scale — first bracket | 12% | PLN 2,034.72 |
| Ryczałt 12% | 12% | PLN 2,034.72 |
| Ryczałt 8.5% | 8.5% | PLN 1,441.26 |
Under the flat tax and ryczałt the deduction does not change the health contribution, which depends on business income or revenue, not on reliefs claimed in the return.
Pay-out: when and at what tax
IKZE funds can be withdrawn without a tax penalty when the saver:
- is at least 65,
- has made IKZE contributions in at least five calendar years (they need not be consecutive).
The pay-out can be in one go or in instalments and is subject to a 10% flat-rate tax on the whole amount — both contributions and investment gains. In the event of the saver's death, the funds go to the designated beneficiary or to the heirs.
Withdrawing all the funds before meeting these conditions is a so-called refund. The refunded amount becomes revenue from other sources taxed on the scale, which in practice undoes the earlier benefit. IKZE is therefore best funded with money that will certainly not be needed before retirement.
IKZE and IKE — the differences
Both are run by the same institutions (investment funds, brokerage houses, insurers, banks), but they work in opposite ways. IKZE gives relief immediately, on contribution, and collects tax on pay-out. IKE gives no deduction in the return, but the pay-out, once the statutory conditions are met, is free of capital-gains tax. You can run both accounts at the same time, each with its own limit. For an entrepreneur with a high tax rate, the immediate IKZE relief is usually more important; someone paying low tax may gain more from IKE.
When IKZE makes less sense
- Low income tax — an entrepreneur on a low ryczałt rate or with income around the tax-free amount will get little back and will pay 10% on the full pay-out.
- No tax to offset — in a year of loss or very low income the relief can be lost, because it cannot be carried forward.
- Liquidity need — money in the business, for example for equipment or a reserve against a dry spell, is sometimes more important than a deferred benefit.
- Income under IP Box — the ability to deduct IKZE from income taxed at the preferential rate must be checked case by case.
Practical tips
- Year-end contributions are best scheduled a few days in advance so that the funds reach the institution before 31 December.
- When moving from employment to business during the year, agree with the institution which limit applies — the higher one is for a person conducting business within the meaning of the social-insurance rules.
- The financial institution sends a contribution statement; it is worth comparing it with the bank statement before filing the return.
- IKZE supplements, but does not replace, benefits from ZUS — more on this in our article on ZUS in Poland.
How Good Balance can help
We include IKZE contributions in the annual return, compare the benefit under different forms of taxation (the details of the flat tax are in our article on the flat tax) and help assess unusual situations, for example combining IKZE with IP Box. Where the rules give no clear answer, we prepare an application for an individual tax interpretation.
