For an employee, the contribution grows with the salary, while an entrepreneur usually pays it from the minimum base — regardless of whether they earn PLN 8,000 or PLN 40,000 a month. That is why even people with high business income may, after 30 years, receive a benefit close to the minimum pension. Below we show the mechanism using 2026 figures and describe what actually raises the future pension.

The formula that decides everything

The Act on Pensions and Disability Benefits from the FUS defines the pension as the quotient of two values:

the calculation base — the sum of pension contributions recorded on the account and sub-account in ZUS (together with indexation and any initial capital),

average further life expectancy for the age on the day of retirement, published annually by GUS and common for women and men.

According to the GUS table published in March 2026, for a person aged 60, 268.9 months are assumed, and at the age of 65 — 222.7 months. The general retirement age is 60 for women and 65 for men, but retiring later means dividing the capital by a smaller number.

Contributions are indexed each year — for 2025 the ratio was 109.81%. At the minimum base for entrepreneurs in 2026 (PLN 5,652), this gives PLN 1,103.27 a month, i.e. about PLN 13,239 a year. At the preferential base (PLN 1,441.80) it is PLN 281.44 a month, and during start-up relief (ulga na start) — zero.

Simulation: 30 years of activity

The calculation below is simplified: it assumes a constant base in today's money and ignores indexation above inflation, initial capital and periods of employment. A higher declared contribution base

Each additional PLN 1,000 of base means PLN 195.20 more a month on the pension account. After 30 years, this gives, in simplified terms, about PLN 70,272 of capital, i.e. about PLN 316 of monthly pension when retiring at 65. The cost is, however, higher than the pension contribution alone, because the disability contribution, sickness contribution (if paid), accident contribution and the Labour Fund contribution are also calculated from the higher base. Higher social contributions reduce the tax base or revenue, which partly softens this cost.

2. Later retirement

Five years of work after reaching 60 is not only additional contributions, but also a divisor smaller by about 46 months. In the simulation with the minimum base, the difference between the pension at 60 and at 65 exceeds PLN 300 a month, despite identical capital.

3. Additional saving outside ZUS

IKZE, IKE or own investments do not depend on the legislator's decisions on indexation and can be adapted to the company's liquidity. IKZE additionally lowers income tax — entrepreneurs are entitled to a higher deposit limit than employees.

4. Watching seniority

For the right to raise the pension to the minimum, 20 or 25 years of seniority matter.
